Desire of the Soul - Ch. 5
Chapter 5
After throwing my lunch away, I decided to go to Paul’s class early. Lunch technically wasn’t done yet but I didn’t care. I walked into the classroom to find Paul talking on the phone at his desk. He smiled at me and motioned for me to sit down. I debated leaving so he could finish his conversation in private or stay in there awkwardly. I ended up sitting down in a desk in the front row and played with the ends of my hair while I waited.
“Yeah, I can’t wait to see you either.” Pause. “I know, it’s been too long…” Paul smiled wide. “Yeah, that too. Hey, I have to get going. See you in a few days. I love you, bye.” He hung up.
“Was that your girlfriend?” I asked him, even though I knew the answer.
“Yeah, that was Stephanie. She’s really excited to see me this weekend.” Paul was still smiling wide.
“Is she coming here to visit?”
“No,” he said, shaking his head. “I’m going to Superior to visit her. We don’t want to risk someone tracing her to our location.” His tone had become serious. I nodded, understanding what his point was.
Paul ruffled through some papers on his desk before looking up at me again with a confused/curious expression. “Why are you here so early?” he asked me, realizing what time it was.
“Well, I didn’t really like the crowd I was sitting with so I decided to come here a tad early and relax.” I explained.
“Weren’t you sitting with that boy, Chris?”
“Yeah, I sat with the popular group and let’s just say I don’t fit in with them.” I shrugged.
“Eh, oh well. You seemed happier yesterday at Dot’s table yesterday.” He pointed out.
“Yeah, they were much friendlier.”
“Believe it or not, I was part of the popular crowd when I was in high school not too long ago. I was the captain of the football team.” He told me. I didn’t find it surprising at all.
“Let me guess, you dated the captain of the cheerleading team?” I rolled my eyes at the thought of how cliché that sounded.
“Um…actually, I did.” Paul’s cheeks turned a light pink color.
“Oh my gosh! You’re blushing!” I exclaimed and started laughing. This caused Paul’s cheeks to darken in color.
“I know how cheesy that is, but I really cared for Ashley.” Paul defended himself.
“Ashley is such a typical cheerleader name.”
“Yeah, whatever.” He said as the bell rang, signaling that lunch was now over. A handful of students filed into the classroom, so I sat down in my assigned seat. A few seconds later, Chris waltzed in and took his seat next to mine.
“Hey,” Chris greeted me. I didn’t answer him because I busy mouthing “Ashley” to Paul. Paul’s mouth spread into a huge, knowing smile. I smiled and looked over at Chris. Chris was staring at me with a confused expression.
“What?” I asked him as my smile faded.
“You’re smiling like an idiot after having a little interaction with Mr. what’s-his-face up there.” Chris sounded personally offended.
“It’s Mr. Barker and we were just talking about an, um, inside joke.” My smile completely vanished. “Why does it matter to you anyway?” I questioned. It was my turn to feel offended.
“Why’d you leave our table earlier?” he asked me, completely avoiding my question.
“I didn’t feel very comfortable there.” I admitted. I might as well be honest with him.
“Why?”
I sighed. “Brad kept staring at my chest and the blondes were just plain stupid.”
“Brad can be a perv sometimes and the blondes are shy around new people, especially around someone as smart as you.” Chris delivered an apologetic smile.
“I think I’m going to sit with Dot from now on. Sorry.” I apologized, but I didn’t necessarily feel sorry and I couldn’t figure out why. The class bell rang as I pondered my thoughts.
“Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen!” Paul was standing in the front of the classroom. “Thanks for coming back to this class.” We worked on “getting to know your partner” activities for the rest of the class period. When the bell rang, I went straight to political systems. The class was as boring as yesterday’s. After school, I found Dot by our lockers.
“Hey, do you want to hang out tomorrow after school?” I offered.
“Sure! Count me in!” Dot cheered.
“Okay, I’ll ask my god father tonight.” I told her and we said our goodbyes. I strolled over to Paul’s car and waited for him. When he arrived, we slipped into the car and drove home.
I hopped into bed and texted Dot about our plans tomorrow. Ernie approved of letting me hang out with Dot. We negotiated and agreed to have Paul observe us from afar instead of having to be next to me. He only okayed that idea because he knew it would look weird if a teacher was hanging out with two of his students.
Dot suggested that we chill at the mall. I texted back and told her it was all good and that I’ll see her at school the next day.
The morning flew by, like usual. Before I knew it, I was sitting next to Dot at the lunch table, eating a chicken patty. Across from me, Mary and Colin are talking about the latest scientific discovery. When I throw away my garbage, Chris is throwing away his garbage too.
“Hey,” I greet him. Chris glances at me, gives me a small head nod, and walks back to his table. What was that about? Just because I don’t want to sit with him, doesn’t mean he has to have an attitude. I roll my eyes and return to my table.

My next class is extremely awkward. Since Chris has some weird problem with me at the moment, he pretty much ignored me the entire period. Throughout the class, I made eye contact with Paul and he could tell that I was frustrated with Chris. During work time towards the end of class, Paul called my name and motioned for me to come up to the front of the classroom by his desk.
“What’s wrong?” he asked me in a hushed voice.
“Chris is still pissed that I chose Dot’s table over his for lunch.” I roll my eyes. Now that I said it out loud, I realize how dumb of an issue it is.
Paul raises an eyebrow. “Do you need me to talk to him?” he offers.
“No, please don’t. It’s fine, really. He’ll get over it within the next couple of days.” I assure him. The last thing I need is Paul to go all parental on Chris for something this dumb.
“Okay, well let me know if there are any more problems.” Paul says and I take that as my cue to sit down. As soon as I’m seated, Chris turns towards me.
“What was that about?” he whispers to me.
“Paul, Um I mean, Mr. Barker wanted to know if everything was okay. He could sense the tension between us.” I explain.
Chris fidgets with his hands and then says, “I’m sorry. I’m being a total jerk to you for no reason. Forgive me?” His clear, blue eyes are staring right at me.
“Yeah, sure.” I nod and go back to my work. His eyes are too intense for me to look at for too long.
At the end of the day, I meet Dot by her car.
“Hey!” she practically screams. “I’m so excited to go shopping!” this girl has way too much pep. I smile nicely and get into her car and she drives off to the mall.
While walking around and listening to Dot talk nonstop, I glance around, wondering if I’ll see Paul. So far, I haven’t seen him at all. But, that’s probably a good thing. It means he’s doing his job right.
“Let’s go in here!” Dot says, pulling me out of my thoughts. We were stopped in front of a Victoria Secret store.
“Umm,” I peer inside of the store. “I never really go into this store. It’s not really my scene.” I admit.
“C’mon! They have decent clothes. So it’s decided. We’re going in there.” Dot says with a determined expression. She grabs my arm and practically drags me into the store.
I walk around the different departments of the store by myself. Dot ran off to the lingerie section as soon as we set foot in the store. Twenty minutes later, I have bought a pair of leggings and Dot bought a bag full of lingerie items.
“Who is all of that for?” I question her.
“Me. I just want to be prepared just in case,” she smiles.
“Okay then,” I shrug it off.

The next store we go into is a book store. I am instantly in heaven. I drift away from Dot over to the classical book section. I pick up “Pretty Women” and read the inside flap. About a half hour later, we’re on our way home. Dot talks the entire ride home about how she hopes to get a date for prom in a few months.
I sit down on the couch in the living room as soon as Dot drops me off at home. I turn on the TV and scroll through the channels.
“Is there anything good on?” Paul asks while he plops down on the couch next to me.
“Nah, not really.” I answer. “I didn’t see you at all today.”
“Yeah, I did an excellent job, I know.” He smirks and shrugs.
I laugh and hit him on the shoulder with a pillow that was on the couch. Paul starts laughing with me.
“Keep it down in here; some people are trying to sleep.” Ernie says as he strolls into the living room.
“Sorry sir,” Paul says, still grinning. I try to keep a straight face as Ernie stares us down. After thirty seconds, he leaves and goes into his room.
Paul and I end up watching a dating show and make fun of it the entire time. Around ten o’clock, he wishes me a good night’s rest and I lay down on my bed. Within minutes, I’m fast asleep.

When I finished my homework, I walked downstairs and didn’t see anyone around. Were Paul and Ernie upstairs in their rooms? I don’t think they would leave a witness protection person alone in the house. I walked around a little more downstairs before giving up. I’m sure they’re just upstairs in their rooms. I sat down on the couch in the living room and turned on the T.V. I decided on watching a random dating show. I find dating shows stupid. If you’re really that desperate to be with someone, you should do online dating. Dating shows are so fake. The girls or guys on them are just in it to be on television. People just get humiliated on them so I never watch them. Right now is an exception, because I’m so utterly bored.
About ten minutes later, I hear someone coming down the stairs. I look up and see its Paul. He walks into the living room and sits on the couch, next to me.
“Hello,” he says to me while pulling out his cell phone.
“Hey, what’s up?” I ask him.
He shrugs. “Nothing too important. I just got done sending my boss a report on you and now I’m checking my email to make sure I don’t have to do anything else tonight.” He waves his phone at me. “What about you?” he asks while gesturing to the T.V. “Dating show? These things are so stupid.”
“Right? I totally agree! I’m only watching it because nothing else is on.” We sit in a few minutes of silence while we both watch the screen. “I would never go on one of these dating shows.” I say after a while.
“Me either,” Paul agrees. “Not like I would need to, considering I have a girlfriend and everything.” He laughs a little.
“Really? How are you able to stay away from her this long? I mean, don’t you miss her?” I ask him. It’s really no surprise that he has a girlfriend. I mean, he’s gorgeous.
“Yeah, I miss her a lot.” He nods. He plays with his phone a little. “Her name is Stephanie. We’ve been dating for four months and we both hate being away from each other for long period of times, but hey, this is what’s going to happen if I’m going to be in this business.” He explains to me.
“I get what you mean.” I say, even though I really have no idea what he’s talking about. I haven’t been in many serious relationships before.

Paul looks at his phone and then shows me it a few seconds later. On the screen, I see a picture of Paul with his arm around a woman around his age with long brunette hair. Their faces express a lot of happiness and love. Stephanie and Paul are adorable together.
“You two are so cute.” I smile at him. He smiles back.
“Thanks.” He puts his phone in his pocket. “I get to see her in a couple of weeks.”
“You’ve definitely got to be excited for that.” I say and he nods.
“I can’t wait to see her.” He says and watches the T.V.
I stretch out my feet in front of me and sink down in my seat a little. I sit like that for a few minutes before it starts to get really uncomfortable. I move a little to the side to be at a better angle but now Paul’s leg is resting against mine and I go still. There is energy bursting off of his touch and I can’t handle it. I glance at him out of the corner of my eye to see if our touch as any effect on him, but it doesn’t look like it, considering his expression is blank and he’s focused on the T.V. I move over to my left a little and rearrange myself on the couch.
After a half hour, Paul gets off of the couch and stands up. “I’m going to go do some more work, are you going to be alright by yourself?” he asks me.
“Yeah, I’ll be fine.” I say as I stretch out on the couch. I sit there for about an hour after Paul goes upstairs. I shut the T.V. off and go into the kitchen and grab a muffin that’s sitting on the counter and bring it upstairs to my room. I shut the door behind me and started to eat the muffin. When I finished eating it, I changed into my pajamas and walked out of my room and went into the bathroom to brush my teeth. While I walked back to my room, I passed Ernie’s room and heard him talking to someone. Out of curiosity, I stopped in the hallway and listened to his conversation.
“I know baby, I’ll see you soon.” Ernie said. “Tell the girls I say hi and that I love them, ok?” He was talking on the phone with his wife. Listening to just those couple of sentences made me feel terrible for Ernie. Here he was, guarding a teenage girl, and missing seeing his own girls. I hope this whole thing blows over quickly so he can go back to his family soon.
I continued walking down the hallway and went back into my bedroom. I lie down on the bed and practically fell asleep on the spot.

“Ugh,” I groan as my alarm clock goes off the next morning at 6:30. I shut it off and get out of bed. After getting dressed, I go down stairs and find Ernie and Paul talking in low whispers at the kitchen counter.
“Good morning gentlemen.” I say as I grab an apple and take a bite out it. They had immediately stopped talking as soon as I walked into the room. “Whatchya guys talking about?” I look at them.
“We were just discussing business.” Ernie answers. Paul nods while eating a spoonful of Lucky Charms cereal.
“You’re eating Lucky Charms?” I ask Paul and start laughing.
“Lucky Charms are the best!” he smiles. “You’re never too old for Lucky Charms.”
I roll my eyes playfully and grab my backpack. “Are you almost ready for school? I need to see people my age. Staying in this house all afternoon and night gets so boring.” I complain.
“Paul and I were talking about letting you hang out with your new school friends outside of school maybe within the next week. We have to check out the area more. And of course, Paul would be escorting you around everywhere.” Ernie said to me.
“I have to have an escort? I’m 18! I don’t need to be babysat.” I complain more.
“Last time I checked, you were almost killed, and the guy who almost killed you has his gang after you, so I think that qualifies you for having to have a ‘babysitter’.”
Ernie: 1.
Angela: 0.
I decide not to argue anymore and I walk out of the room. I put on my jacket and go out to Paul’s car. I get into the passenger side and wait. Paul walks out five minutes later and gets in the car and drives towards the school.
“You should join drama.” He says to me after a few minutes of silence.
“Why do you say that?” I look at him from the corner of my eye.
“Well, you’re very good at being dramatic.”
“I am not dramatic!” I said, and regretted it right after the words came out of my mouth. They came out kind of high pitched and whiny.
“My point exactly.” He chuckles.
“Whatever.” I say and look out the window as we pull into the school’s parking lot. I open the car door before the car fully stops and get out. As I walk through the school doors, I see Dot right inside.
“Hey, Dot!” I call her name. She turns around and smiles at me. When I walk up to her, she gives me a huge hug.
“Hi! How’re you doing? Did you have a nice night?” Dot asks me.
“I’m alright, and yes, I had a good night. How about you?” We start walking to our lockers.
“I had a great night! I studied for my history test and then hung out with my family.” I open up my locker and get out my things for homeroom and walk with Dot to our class.
“That sounds like a lot of fun, but I think I would get bored pretty quickly. I’ve been so bored ever since coming here.” I sighed.
“You should come hang out with me sometime!” Dot exclaims.
I shrug. “I’m not sure if my godfather will let me out of the house.”
“Well, if he lets you out, let me know, ok?” Dot smiles.
“Will do.” I say and sit down in my seat and Dot sits in front of me.
Homeroom goes by pretty slowly. Since I did all of my homework the night before, I just sat there and colored on my notebook. I darted from the classroom when the bell rang and went to my Spanish class without stopping at my locker.
I sat down in my seat and smiled at Chris, who is my partner. “Hola.” I say to him.
“Sup,” he nods back to me and I smile more. We talked about how our night was and then the teacher came in and class started.
I was surprised when the bell rang for the end of class. I’ve noticed that time flies whenever I’m talking to Chris. He just has that effect on me. Chris walks with me to our lockers and then we both go to lunch together. I agreed to sit with him today since I sat with Dot and her friends yesterday. I’ll probably have to keep switching back and forth each day between the two tables so it’s fair to both Dot and Chris.
We get our lunches and sit down at Chris’ table. A couple of the guys check me out and a few of the girls stare at me as I sit down. Maybe I’ll spend more time at Dot’s table…I feel less self-conscience when I sit over there. I don’t even like the popular crowd, so why am I sitting here? Oh yeah, that’s right. I befriended a popular guy. Good going Angela.
“Hey, I’m Brad.” A brunette guy says to me. He’s got a nice build and is wearing a varsity sports jacket. He’s not really looking me in the eyes and I start to feel even more self-conscience.
“Hi, nice to meet you. I’m Angela.” I introduce myself.
“Are you that new girl that lives with that hot new teacher??” I blonde girl asks me. She’s twirling her hair and is chewing gum loudly. I look down at the table in front of her and just notice a water bottle with straw in it. Nothing else. I notice that all of the other girls at the table have the same thing as her. I feel like a pig now, and I only have nachos and a Gatorade.
“Yeah, that’s me.” I smile just a tad.
“Omigod! He’s sooo hawt!” says another blonde at the table. I press my lips together and look at Chris.
“I thought Angela could sit by us every now and then?” Chris says to the table of people. They all smile and nod in agreement.
“Thanks for letting me sit here.” I say to them and bite a little piece off of a nacho chip.
“Is that your real hair color?” the gum-chewing-hair-twirling blonde asks me.
“Yeah, it’s all natural.” I answer back. My hair is extremely orange and I get asked if it’s my natural hair color all of the time, so it’s no surprise that this girl asked me.
“It’s so…bright.” Captain Obvious strikes again. I nod and press my lips together again. The girl goes back to talking with the other blonde. I look down and when I look back up, Brad is staring at me. Feeling uncomfortable under his stare, I stand up.
“I’m going to go throw this away.” I say to Chris and walk over to the garbage and throw my nachos away, completely wasting my money that I had spent on them.
One thing is for sure. I definitely do not fit in with the popular crowd. And I am one hundred percent okay with that.

Chris and I were walking down the hallway to the cafeteria when Dot skipped up to us.
“Hey guys! Have a good morning so far, Angela?” Dot asked me.

I shrugged. “It was alright. Chris helped make it better.” I smiled over at Chris and he smiled back at me.

“That’s great! I knew you two would become friends!” Dot said. We got into the lunch line. Today’s lunch looked kind of gross, so I decided to get nachos instead. Chris and Dot got their lunches. Dot walked to a table with a few other girls and a few guys. They were wearing nice clothes and glasses and were working on homework. I guessed that it was the smart table. Chris turned and started walking towards a table filled with blondes and cute guys. All of the girls were wearing name-brand clothes like Aeropostle. All of the guys were wearing some type of varsity spots jacket. I decided that the table must be the preppy table.

I stood there awkwardly, not knowing where to sit. Dot and Chris both stopped in their tracks and turned around and gave me the look that said “You can come sit with me…” I didn’t know what to do. Since Dot was my first friend here, I decided to go sit with her. I shot Chris an apologetic look and walked over to Dot. I’d rather sit with the nerds than the preps. I don’t exactly fit in with the preps. I don’t like wearing name-brand clothes. I don’t have anywhere near blonde hair and I’m not tall and anorexic-skinny. I also don’t pile makeup on my face. Why bother? Why hide behind a mask?

Everyone at Dot’s table looked up from their homework to look at me when I sat down next to Dot.
“Hi, I’m Angela.” I said to them. They all looked like they didn’t know what to say to me.

“Angela just moved here from Milwaukee and she doesn’t have a place to sit, so I thought she could sit here with us…Is that alright with you guys?” Dot glanced at everyone. They all nodded and went back to their homework. One girl didn’t and she smiled at me.

“Hello, my name is Mary. It’s nice to meet you. We don’t get many new kids that come to our table.” She said, kind of bitterly. “So it’s nice to have a new person here.”

“Yeah, I bet.” I said, not really sure how to respond.

“My name is Collin.” Said a boy who was sitting next to Mary.

“It’s nice to meet you, Collin.” I smiled at him. I started eating my nachos.

“So, where are you from?” Collin asked me.

“I’m from Milwaukee. So, it was quite a move from me.” I said. I missed my friends. I didn’t even get to say good bye to any of them. They had no idea where I was right now. I also missed my family. I missed talking to them everyday.

Collin nodded in agreement. “I’d say. Do you miss everyone from where you used to live?” he asked, as if he had just heard my thoughts.

“Yes, I miss them all greatly. I didn’t really get to say good bye to them. It was a sudden move and stuff.” I said, saying the truth. It was probably the most truthful I had said all day, except for what my first name was.

“That sucks.” He said, and then went back to eating. I continued to eat my nachos and observed the cafeteria while Dot talked happily with the other kids at the table. It seemed like Collin, Mary, and Dot were the leaders of the table. I glanced over at where Chris was sitting. His table was full of laughter and I bet it was over something not even close to being funny. Chris was facing me and he smiled and waved at me when he saw me staring at him. I smiled and blushed. To hide my blush, I looked down at my nachos.

Within the next few minutes, I finished my food and stood up. Dot showed me where the garbage was and I walked over to it. I saw that Paul was standing near the garbage can, supervising the cafeteria. After throwing my garbage away, I went over to him.
“Hey Paul.” I smiled at him.

He looked over at me and a hint of a smirk was on his face. “We’re in school, so it’s Mr. Barker to you.” I looked away again as my cheeks betrayed me by blushing a little. “So, how is school going so far? I see you’ve made a couple of friends.” He gestured to the table I was just sitting at.

“Yep, I’ve made a few friends. But it’s still not the same as my old school.” I said, sadness lining my words.

“I know, and it never will be. But it was necessary for you to come here, and you know that.” He said, his face turning more serious than before. Feeling embarrassed for bringing it up, I decided to change the subject.

“Do you miss your home? I mean, you had to move on short notice to here too...I’m not the only one being affected by this.” I pointed out.

Paul shrugged. “I don’t really think I’m missing much. Springfield really wasn’t the place for me. I’m glad to be actually working on a case. The cases I’ve been working on since getting out of college have been ridiculous. An example is that I had to solve a mystery on who stole an old woman’s china collection.” He shook his head. “So this is quite exciting for me.”

“Glad I could make your life more interesting.” I scoffed.

“You know what I mean, Angela.” My heart did a little weird thumping thing when he said my name. What’s wrong with me? My heart has never done that before. Maybe it’s the nachos…stupid school food.

I shook my head a tad to get rid of the thoughts I just had. “I should get back to my friends.” I said and motioned towards Dot.

“I understand. It was nice talking to you for a bit. I’ll see you next hour for class.” He smiled and I walked back over to Dot.

“You know the new teacher?” Mary asked me.

“Yes, he lives with me.” I said. That earned me a few shocked and confused looks from the table.

“He’s my godfather’s son and I live with my godfather.” That earned me the same looks again. “My parents died…” I said, putting a sad face on. I have to make sure that I play the part.

“Oh my goodness!” Collin said, looking sympathetic. “We’re sorry for bringing it up. It won’t happen again.” He assured me.

“Thanks.” I said to him.

“He’s cute.” Mary said while checking out Paul, who was looking in the other direction. “You lucky bi**h.”

I laughed. “I admit that he’s cute, but he’s in his twenties, he’s my teacher, and he’s my godfather’s son. It’d be weird to even think about anything going on between Paul and me.” I explained.

“Paul? That’s a hot name.” Mary said again. I truly was seeing another side of Mary. I looked at Collin and he was sitting there really awkwardly. He looked at Mary and I could tell already that he has a crush on her and this was totally making him jealous and uncomfortable.

Collin stood up abruptly. “I’m going to throw my lunch away.” Collin walked away. Mary gave me a look that said, “What was up with that?” I shrugged. Right after that, the bell rang.

I went to my locker and got my things before going to class. It was time for the class that Paul is teaching. For some odd reason, I felt nervous. I shrugged it off and entered the class. I took a seat at one of the tables and Chris sat down next to me. Paul was up at the front of the classroom, writing Mr. Barker on the chalkboard.
“Have a nice lunch?” Chris asked me while taking out a pencil.

I nodded. “Yeah, Dot’s friends are really nice.” I responded.

“You should sit by me at my table sometime.” He said while scribbling his name onto his folder.

“Sure, that’d be fun. Just let me know when.” I smiled at Chris.

After a few seconds of silence, the bell rang. Paul turned around and faced the class.

“Hello ladies and gentlemen. My name is Mr. Barker. I will be your new teacher for home education. We will be exploring many units for the rest of the school year, and I am excited to teach them to you.” He paused. “To start off today’s class, look to the person sitting next to you.” Everyone in the class did. “That is who your partner will be for the rest of the year in this class, unless I say otherwise. If you don’t know who the person is next to you, introduce yourself, because you will be spending lots of time with them. Now, let’s get started.” Paul smiled. He spent the next fifteen minutes talking a little about him and what we are going to be covering in the class. I absentmindedly doodled on my notebook with my pen while he talked.

For the rest of the class, we did small assignments that dealt with our environment in the classroom, getting to know our partners, and talking about what we wanted to accomplish this year. It was a pretty laid back class, if you ask me. I hope this class was like that for the rest of the year. When the bell rang, I stood up and collected my things.

“What class do you have now?” Chris asked me. I pulled out my schedule and looked at it.

“Um, I have political systems.” I answered him.

“I have calculus class, so I guess we don’t have last period together.” Chris said, looking kind of sad. Was he actually sad that we didn’t have class together or just joking around?

“Shucks.” I said while we walked down the hall to our lockers. When we got there, I opened up my locker and got my things for my class. “See you later.” I said to Chris as I left my locker.

Political systems class was a pretty boring class. I practically slept through the whole class. The only time I was actually paying attention was when the teacher told me to do an introduction to the class, which I thought was pointless. I guessed that the whole school already knew who I was by lunch time. This town is pretty small.

The class dragged on for forever, but the bell finally rang at 2:50. I got out of the class as fast as I could and grabbed everything out of my locker. I walked out to the parking lot and found Paul’s car, exactly where he had parked it this morning. The car was locked so I had to stand awkwardly outside of it until he came. While standing there, I watched the students file out of the school. About five minutes later, I saw Paul walk out of the school and was on his way to his car. I observed him while he walked. He had a confident walk, like he knew he was the best and wasn’t afraid for everyone else to know. That made me smile a little to myself. A confident guy is always a good thing, as long as they’re not too confident and get cocky.

“Hey Angela.” Paul said as soon as he got to the car. “Have a nice afternoon?” He unlocked the car and got inside. I got into the passenger side and put my seatbelt on.

“Yeah, it was fine.” I paused. “Political systems is a really boring class.” I admitted.

Paul nodded. “I remember when I had to take that class my senior year. I slept through the whole semester.” He let out a small laugh. “How was my class?” He asked me while pulling out of the school parking lot and drove down the road to our house.

I shrugged. “It was okay. But next time, don’t talk too much. Kids like doing more activities. But otherwise, it was alright.”

“Thanks for the feedback.” he glanced at me and smiled. His smile is amazing, just saying.

“No problem, Mr. Barker.” I said back to him.

“You can call me Paul outside of school.” He said as we pulled into the driveway of our house. I nodded and got out of the car and walked inside. I went up to mu bedroom and got started on my homework

Desire of the Soul-ch.2
Here is chapter 2 of my story :)

_________________________________________________

I woke up the next morning when my alarm clock went off at 6:30. I rubbed my eyes as I walked out of room and down the hallway to the bathroom. Right as I turned the corner, I ran right into someone.

“Whoa, I’m sorry.” I mumbled. I looked up to see a really cute guy. He has brown hair, brown eyes, and had to be over six feet tall.

“No, it’s ok.” he said in a charming voice. He then smiled an amazing smile and I felt a little bit of myself melt inside. He moved out of the way and I stepped into the bathroom and took a shower.

After my shower, I blow-dried my hair and went into the kitchen for breakfast. Officer Bla-Ernie, was making pancakes and sausage for breakfast.

“Good morning.” Ernie smiled at me. He flipped another pancake and then put some on a plate and gave it to me.

“Good morning to you too.” I said as I took a bite of the pancake. “Yum! These things are amazing!”

Ernie laughed. “Thanks, they’re just pancakes.” he said and laughed again. I laughed with him.

“I know, it’s just that my mom and dad never made breakfast for me so I always had cereal for breakfast.” I explained to them. Ernie smiled and put a few sausages on my plate and I ate them too. Maybe living here wouldn’t be that bad.

“I have a question.” I said to Ernie. He looked up at me. “Do you have any kids?” I asked and took another bite of my pancake.

He smiled and nodded. “Yes, I have two kids. I have a boy and a girl. Emily is fourteen and Will is eight. They are my world.” he smiled again. I smiled back. It must be hard for him to leave his kids behind. I know it would be hard for me.

I finished my pancakes and sausage just as the cute guy from before walked downstairs and smiled at Ernie and me.

“Hello everyone. Ready for school today Angela?” the guy asked me.

“Uh, yeah. I, uh, guess so.” I shrugged. School was never a problem for me. I always got good grades and never got into trouble. But transferring to a new school during the middle of senior year might be a little tricky.

“Before I forget, I’m Officer Paul Barker. But you can call me Paul.” Paul said and smiled. He extended his hand and I shook it.
“It’s nice to meet you. I’m Angela, but you already obviously know that.” I smiled at Paul and he laughed a little bit. “I have to get going to school...but I have no idea where that is.” I admitted.

“No worries, I’ll drop you off.” Paul said and grabbed my backpack for me and walked out of the door.

“I’ll see you later, Ernie.” I said to Ernie as I followed Paul outside to his car. I got into the passenger seat and he drove away.

“So, Paul, what am I supposed to tell people when they ask why I moved here and who you and Ernie are, because you’re obviously not my parents.” I said with a small, short laugh at the end.

“Well, the story is that Ernie is your godfather and I’m his son. Your parents died in a car crash recently, and you don’t have any other family members around for you to go live with, so Ernie took you in. It just so happens that I’m going to be a new teacher at this school so I can keep an eye on you. When people ask you where you used to live, say you are from Milwaukee, okay?” Paul said to me while driving.

I nodded. “Okay, sounds like a plan. It’s not too much to remember.” I said as I looked out of the car window. This place is definitely different than Chicago. You can actually see the grass and trees here.

“Right. And remember, your last name is now Martin. You go by the name Angela Martin, not Angela Ward.” I nodded again. “And if you ever need me during the day at school, come find me. If you can’t do that, my number is in your phone.” He handed me a cell phone.

“This isn’t my phone.” I told me while looking down at the phone in my hand.

“I know. We are giving you a new one so no one can trace you down and so people from Chicago can’t contact you. We also took down your facebook page. We don’t need anyone looking at that anymore because as of today, Angela Ward no longer exists.”

Whoa. I no longer “exist.” Will I ever be able to go back to Chicago and see all of my friends? I miss them so much and I hate that I never even got to say goodbye...

Paul pulled into the high school parking lot. It was smaller than my old school, that’s for sure. I grabbed my backpack and got out of the car. A few students who were also in the parking lot stared at Paul and me. I had a feeling there would be lots of staring today. But oh well, there’s really nothing I can do about it. Unless I convinced Ernie to home school me...

Paul and I walked into the school together. “We have to go to the office and check in. Only the principal knows about why we are really here, so just keep everything on the down low. Try to keep yourself on the down low, okay?” he looked at me.

“Keep myself on the down low. I got it.” We walked into the principal’s office and got everything settled in. After that, I went to my locker and put my bag in there and got out my schedule. First hour was a study hall. Paul was going to be teaching a home education class, which he signed me up for. That class was right after lunch. At this school the schedule is a block schedule, so I only have four classes a day. Thank heaven. I really was not in the mood for eight classes a day right now.

I walked to my study hall and sat down in the back. I looked around and saw that the teacher wasn’t even in the classroom yet. Then I noticed I was pretty much the only student in here. I looked at the clock on the wall and class starts in three minutes. Does anybody here know how to be on time or read a clock? I took out my notebook and started doodling on it. As the next three minutes took place, students started filing into the classroom and the teacher walked in right as the bell was ringing.

The teacher introduced himself to me as Mr. Galsworthy and told me that study hall was a time for me to work on my homework and talk quietly with others in the room. He sat down and then told me to go sit back down in my desk. I did what he told me to do and then doodled some more on my notebook.

A few minutes later, a girl approached me. The girl had blonde hair that curled at the bottom. Her eyes were an intense blue color. She looked around the same height as me and was probably my age considering she was in the same study hall as me and at this school, all seniors were in the same study hall.

“Hi! You’re Angela Martin, right? I’m Dot Smith. Some teachers asked me to be your student guide since you’re new here.” Dot said and gave a huge smile.

“Hey, it’s nice to meet you too.” I smiled a little.

Dot smiled again and sat down next to me. “So, where are you from?”

“Uh,” I thought back to what Paul had said to me earlier in the car. “I’m from Milwaukee.”

“That’s quite a ways away from here!” she exclaimed and the teacher told her to tone down her volume.

“Yep.” I nodded. I really wasn’t in the mood to talk to anyone right now.

“So, I heard you live with your godfather and his son.” Dot said to me.

“Yeah, that’s true.” Wow, news got around really fast here.

“What happened to your parents?” She questioned.

“They died in a car crash…” I said, remembering my fake story.

“Oh my goodness! That’s so sad! I know I never met them or anything, but I’m sorry for your loss. If you ever need to talk to someone, I’m here. We’re friends now.” She smiled warmly.

“Thanks Dot.” I smiled a little at her. If only she knew my parents weren’t actually dead and were living down in Chicago. If word ever got out about me being in witness protection, it would spread like a wild fire around here.

“No problem! Now, I have to do some homework, so I’ll talk to you after class.” Dot said as she opened up a text book. She started doing her homework so I took out my iPod and put my ear buds in. It’s time to listen to some depressing music.

When class was over, Dot walked me to my locker. Turns out that our lockers are right next to each other. What a coincidence.
“Hey, do you know who is on the other side of my locker?” I asked Dot. I might as well befriend that person too while I’m at it.

“Yeah, that’s Chris Holiday’s locker. He’s a senior and suuuuppeeerrr cute!” Dot gushed. “Oh, here he comes right now!” She gestured towards a guy walking down the hallway. You had to admit he was pretty darn cute. He was tall, blonde, fair skin, and blue eyes. Pretty intense blue eyes, considering I could see them from twenty-five feet away.

“Hey, you must be the new girl.” Chris said as he walked up to his locker. “I’m Chris.”

“Hi, I’m Angela, but some people call me Ang.” I smiled at him. He opened his locker and shoved his books in.

“So, what class do you have now?” he asked me while grabbing a book out of his locker.

I looked at my schedule. “Um, I have Spanish class.”

“Me too!” he smiled wide. He grabbed my schedule from my hands and read over it. “We have cooking class together too after lunch.”

“Awesome! The new teacher of that class is my godfather’s son.” I informed him.

“Really? That’s cool!” Dot smiled. I had kind of forgotten that she was even here.

“Well, we should get to class. Senora Lopez gets mad when we’re late to class.” Chris took my books out of my hands. “Here, let me take those for you.” He smiled wide. I smiled back and we both walked to class after saying our goodbyes to Dot.

When we walked into Spanish class, I had to do the usual introductions of myself, where I came from, blah blah blah. It turns out that Chris doesn’t have a partner because there was an uneven number of students in the class, so that means I get to be his partner. Plus, he sits in the back and I love sitting in the back of classrooms. It’s fun to watch the whole class and how ridiculous everyone can look. It entertains me when I’m bored. I picked out my Spanish class name, Alicia, and learned that Chris’ Spanish name is Carlos.
During class, Chris and I talked and learned more about each other. I learned that he has a little sister who is twelve years old. I also learned that his family is divorced, and that he lives with his mom. I was so sad when the end-of-class-bell rang. But it turns out that Chris and I have the same lunch, Lunch A, so I felt better. So far I have made two friends here, if you don’t include Paul and Ernie. Maybe living here for a while won’t be so bad.
