Chapter 5
After throwing my lunch away, I decided to go to Paul’s class early. Lunch technically wasn’t done yet but I didn’t care. I walked into the classroom to find Paul talking on the phone at his desk. He smiled at me and motioned for me to sit down. I debated leaving so he could finish his conversation in private or stay in there awkwardly. I ended up sitting down in a desk in the front row and played with the ends of my hair while I waited.
“Yeah, I can’t wait to see you either.” Pause. “I know, it’s been too long…” Paul smiled wide. “Yeah, that too. Hey, I have to get going. See you in a few days. I love you, bye.” He hung up.
“Was that your girlfriend?” I asked him, even though I knew the answer.
“Yeah, that was Stephanie. She’s really excited to see me this weekend.” Paul was still smiling wide.
“Is she coming here to visit?”
“No,” he said, shaking his head. “I’m going to Superior to visit her. We don’t want to risk someone tracing her to our location.” His tone had become serious. I nodded, understanding what his point was.
Paul ruffled through some papers on his desk before looking up at me again with a confused/curious expression. “Why are you here so early?” he asked me, realizing what time it was.
“Well, I didn’t really like the crowd I was sitting with so I decided to come here a tad early and relax.” I explained.
“Weren’t you sitting with that boy, Chris?”
“Yeah, I sat with the popular group and let’s just say I don’t fit in with them.” I shrugged.
“Eh, oh well. You seemed happier yesterday at Dot’s table yesterday.” He pointed out.
“Yeah, they were much friendlier.”
“Believe it or not, I was part of the popular crowd when I was in high school not too long ago. I was the captain of the football team.” He told me. I didn’t find it surprising at all.
“Let me guess, you dated the captain of the cheerleading team?” I rolled my eyes at the thought of how cliché that sounded.
“Um…actually, I did.” Paul’s cheeks turned a light pink color.
“Oh my gosh! You’re blushing!” I exclaimed and started laughing. This caused Paul’s cheeks to darken in color.
“I know how cheesy that is, but I really cared for Ashley.” Paul defended himself.
“Ashley is such a typical cheerleader name.”
“Yeah, whatever.” He said as the bell rang, signaling that lunch was now over. A handful of students filed into the classroom, so I sat down in my assigned seat. A few seconds later, Chris waltzed in and took his seat next to mine.
“Hey,” Chris greeted me. I didn’t answer him because I busy mouthing “Ashley” to Paul. Paul’s mouth spread into a huge, knowing smile. I smiled and looked over at Chris. Chris was staring at me with a confused expression.
“What?” I asked him as my smile faded.
“You’re smiling like an idiot after having a little interaction with Mr. what’s-his-face up there.” Chris sounded personally offended.
“It’s Mr. Barker and we were just talking about an, um, inside joke.” My smile completely vanished. “Why does it matter to you anyway?” I questioned. It was my turn to feel offended.
“Why’d you leave our table earlier?” he asked me, completely avoiding my question.
“I didn’t feel very comfortable there.” I admitted. I might as well be honest with him.
“Why?”
I sighed. “Brad kept staring at my chest and the blondes were just plain stupid.”
“Brad can be a perv sometimes and the blondes are shy around new people, especially around someone as smart as you.” Chris delivered an apologetic smile.
“I think I’m going to sit with Dot from now on. Sorry.” I apologized, but I didn’t necessarily feel sorry and I couldn’t figure out why. The class bell rang as I pondered my thoughts.
“Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen!” Paul was standing in the front of the classroom. “Thanks for coming back to this class.” We worked on “getting to know your partner” activities for the rest of the class period. When the bell rang, I went straight to political systems. The class was as boring as yesterday’s. After school, I found Dot by our lockers.
“Hey, do you want to hang out tomorrow after school?” I offered.
“Sure! Count me in!” Dot cheered.
“Okay, I’ll ask my god father tonight.” I told her and we said our goodbyes. I strolled over to Paul’s car and waited for him. When he arrived, we slipped into the car and drove home.
I hopped into bed and texted Dot about our plans tomorrow. Ernie approved of letting me hang out with Dot. We negotiated and agreed to have Paul observe us from afar instead of having to be next to me. He only okayed that idea because he knew it would look weird if a teacher was hanging out with two of his students.
Dot suggested that we chill at the mall. I texted back and told her it was all good and that I’ll see her at school the next day.
The morning flew by, like usual. Before I knew it, I was sitting next to Dot at the lunch table, eating a chicken patty. Across from me, Mary and Colin are talking about the latest scientific discovery. When I throw away my garbage, Chris is throwing away his garbage too.
“Hey,” I greet him. Chris glances at me, gives me a small head nod, and walks back to his table. What was that about? Just because I don’t want to sit with him, doesn’t mean he has to have an attitude. I roll my eyes and return to my table.
My next class is extremely awkward. Since Chris has some weird problem with me at the moment, he pretty much ignored me the entire period. Throughout the class, I made eye contact with Paul and he could tell that I was frustrated with Chris. During work time towards the end of class, Paul called my name and motioned for me to come up to the front of the classroom by his desk.
“What’s wrong?” he asked me in a hushed voice.
“Chris is still pissed that I chose Dot’s table over his for lunch.” I roll my eyes. Now that I said it out loud, I realize how dumb of an issue it is.
Paul raises an eyebrow. “Do you need me to talk to him?” he offers.
“No, please don’t. It’s fine, really. He’ll get over it within the next couple of days.” I assure him. The last thing I need is Paul to go all parental on Chris for something this dumb.
“Okay, well let me know if there are any more problems.” Paul says and I take that as my cue to sit down. As soon as I’m seated, Chris turns towards me.
“What was that about?” he whispers to me.
“Paul, Um I mean, Mr. Barker wanted to know if everything was okay. He could sense the tension between us.” I explain.
Chris fidgets with his hands and then says, “I’m sorry. I’m being a total jerk to you for no reason. Forgive me?” His clear, blue eyes are staring right at me.
“Yeah, sure.” I nod and go back to my work. His eyes are too intense for me to look at for too long.
At the end of the day, I meet Dot by her car.
“Hey!” she practically screams. “I’m so excited to go shopping!” this girl has way too much pep. I smile nicely and get into her car and she drives off to the mall.
While walking around and listening to Dot talk nonstop, I glance around, wondering if I’ll see Paul. So far, I haven’t seen him at all. But, that’s probably a good thing. It means he’s doing his job right.
“Let’s go in here!” Dot says, pulling me out of my thoughts. We were stopped in front of a Victoria Secret store.
“Umm,” I peer inside of the store. “I never really go into this store. It’s not really my scene.” I admit.
“C’mon! They have decent clothes. So it’s decided. We’re going in there.” Dot says with a determined expression. She grabs my arm and practically drags me into the store.
I walk around the different departments of the store by myself. Dot ran off to the lingerie section as soon as we set foot in the store. Twenty minutes later, I have bought a pair of leggings and Dot bought a bag full of lingerie items.
“Who is all of that for?” I question her.
“Me. I just want to be prepared just in case,” she smiles.
“Okay then,” I shrug it off.
The next store we go into is a book store. I am instantly in heaven. I drift away from Dot over to the classical book section. I pick up “Pretty Women” and read the inside flap. About a half hour later, we’re on our way home. Dot talks the entire ride home about how she hopes to get a date for prom in a few months.
I sit down on the couch in the living room as soon as Dot drops me off at home. I turn on the TV and scroll through the channels.
“Is there anything good on?” Paul asks while he plops down on the couch next to me.
“Nah, not really.” I answer. “I didn’t see you at all today.”
“Yeah, I did an excellent job, I know.” He smirks and shrugs.
I laugh and hit him on the shoulder with a pillow that was on the couch. Paul starts laughing with me.
“Keep it down in here; some people are trying to sleep.” Ernie says as he strolls into the living room.
“Sorry sir,” Paul says, still grinning. I try to keep a straight face as Ernie stares us down. After thirty seconds, he leaves and goes into his room.
Paul and I end up watching a dating show and make fun of it the entire time. Around ten o’clock, he wishes me a good night’s rest and I lay down on my bed. Within minutes, I’m fast asleep.
After throwing my lunch away, I decided to go to Paul’s class early. Lunch technically wasn’t done yet but I didn’t care. I walked into the classroom to find Paul talking on the phone at his desk.
